Six migrant workers from Odisha were killed and eight others injured in a tragic quarry accident at a construction site in Andhra Pradesh’s Bapatla district, officials confirmed on Sunday.

According to Bapatla District Collector J Venkata Murali, the incident occurred when a portion of the quarry site collapsed during drilling operations around 9:30 AM. A total of 16 workers were present at the site at the time.

Responding swiftly, the Andhra Pradesh government registered a criminal case against the quarry management, acting on directions from Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu. “A comprehensive investigation will be conducted in coordination with the police and concerned departments,” the Collector stated.

Among the eight injured, one worker remains in critical condition and is currently undergoing treatment at GBR Hospital in Narasaraopet.

All the victims were migrant labourers from Odisha. The quarry management has pledged Rs 14 lakh in compensation to the families of each deceased worker. Additionally, the government has assured that all medical expenses for the injured will be covered fully until their recovery.

Eyewitness Raghav, a quarry worker from Odisha, told ANI, “Around 9:30 this morning, while drilling was underway, rocks suddenly fell from above, causing the accident. The Collector visited and assured us of full assistance.”

Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu expressed deep sorrow over the tragedy and extended condolences to the families of the deceased. He instructed officials to ensure top-quality medical care for the injured and to conduct a thorough probe into the incident.
